If I’ve reached any level of success in my career it has been because of many selfless people, beginning with my family who lift me up on their shoulders and help me reach higher and see farther than I ever could on my own two feet.
One of those special people in my life was my Abuelita Hortencia.
She was on my mind and in my heart when I announced a scholarship in her name at the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) national convention in August 2016 where I was inducted into the organization’s Hall of Fame.
Abuelita Hortencia was a loving, caring, beautiful person who is as much an influence today to her children and grandchildren as she was when she was alive.
No one WINS alone. Each of us can point to special people in our lives who helped us reach our goals and dreams.
The Hortencia Zavala Scholarship provides worthy NAHJ students with an annual awards and provides valuable mentoring and experience opportunities via The Latino News Network.
